About Vanuatu<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Vanuatu \u2013 one of the world\u2019s last unspoiled, pristine environments \u2013 is a South Pacific Ocean nation comprising 80 plus islands that stretch 1,300 kilometers north to south in a \u201cY\u201d shaped archipelago.  Vanuatu lies to the east of Australia, northeast of New Caledonia and west of Fiji<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The islands offer scuba diving at coral reefs, underwater caverns and wrecks such as the WWII-era troopship SS President Coolidge. Harborside Port Vila, the nation\u2019s capital and economic center, is on the island of Efate<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Multiple waves of colonizers, each speaking a distinct language, migrated to the islands in the millennia preceding European exploration in the 18th century. This settlement pattern accounts for the complex linguistic diversity found on the archipelago to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British Explorer James Cook, landing on Tanna Island in 1774 named the Islands the \u201cNew Hebrides\u201d. Later, the British and French, who settled the New Hebrides in the 19th century, agreed in 1906 to an Anglo-French Condominium, which jointly administered the islands until independence in 1980, when the new name of Vanuatu (approximate meaning \u201cOur Land Forever\u201d), was adopted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
